Ethernet Orchestra is an Internet-based musical ensemble that explores intercultural improvisation through networked musical performances on the web. Performances include collaborations with networked visual artists (VJs) mixing live art collages to the ensembles’ improvised sound-stream. It is in combining these two artistic mediums that we present Distant Presences: a telematic audio-visual radio performance, to the ‘The challenges of the present’ Biopolitics Symposium.

The symposium theme addressing the challenges of the present day is pertinent to the work of Ethernet Orchestra, and the research of founder Roger Mills. Philosophy is a key discipline in the analysis of telematic musical sound and interaction. The role of the body in mediating geographically displaced networked experiences is crucial to understanding the phenomenology of networked musical interaction across cultures. Roger’s research focuses on the ways in which intercultural musicians collaborate and perform together online and how performers express their interactive relationships in musical sound. His recent book Tele-Improvisation: Intercultural Interaction in the Online Global Jam Session outlines his thesis that novel cultural musical encounters are developed through shared experiences of difference embodied in musical sound. Distant Presences provides a glimpse into the ways in which embodied sound evolves in a freely improvised audio-visual telematic performance.
